Six hundred metres down, and nothing leaves.
Ngorongoro is a caldera with its own lake, its own fever-tree forest and roughly twenty thousand animals that stay all year. Descent permits are timed, the road down opens at first light, and most vehicles are back on the rim by mid-afternoon. Book the early slot and you get the floor close to empty.

Summit night starts before midnight.
You leave Barafu in the dark at about eleven, walk six hours of scree by headtorch, and reach Uhuru Peak as the light comes up behind Mawenzi. Everything in the days before that exists to give your body time to adjust. Machame is fast and beautiful, Lemosho adds a day and adds summits.
The reef starts a hundred metres offshore.
Mnemba holds the clearest water on the island and the boats leave early because the wind gets up by eleven. Green turtles at Kizimkazi, a sandbank at Nakupenda that has gone again by evening, and lunch grilled on the beach it came off.
The mountain has good days off.
Materuni drops seventy metres into a pool cold enough to make you shout. The Chagga farms above Moshi roast and pound their own beans while you watch. Kikuletwa is a spring-fed pool under fig roots, an hour out on a bad road and worth every minute of it.
Coral rag, carved doors, a long memory.
The alleys were laid out for donkeys and never widened. Omani merchants, Indian traders and Swahili builders all left something in the same street. The Anglican cathedral stands on the site of the old slave market, and the memorial to the people held and sold there is part of every honest visit. A guide is the difference between a maze and a map.
One country, three different trips.
The northern parks run on early starts and long drives. Kilimanjaro runs on days, not hours. Zanzibar runs on the tide. Most people take two of the three, and the season matters more than the order.

Two weeks, the way it usually goes.
Almost everyone lands at Kilimanjaro Airport, drives north into the parks, then flies out to the coast for the last stretch. This is the sequence that wastes the least time on the road.

Down in Moshi
Come down to Moshi. Walk in to Materuni, roast and pound coffee with a Chagga family, then sit in the Kikuletwa springs until your fingers wrinkle. If you came to climb, this is where the seven-day route starts instead.

Across to Zanzibar
Fly to Unguja, give Stone Town a full day with a guide, then move up to the north coast for the reef. Boats leave early, the wind arrives late morning, and the tide decides everything else about the week.
